About the Instructor

Covert Blackledge has been teaching martial arts and swimming since his teen years. He has over 30 years experience in martial arts. He has been with Timberbend Academy for 17 years. He was a swim coach for the Huntsville Youth Summer Team, and for the summer team at Springpark Health Club in Garland, Texas. Mr. Blackledge was a top competitor in Texas during the 80's and was featured in Karate / Kung Fu Illustrated Magazine throughout his "competition days." He has performed at Astroworld in Houston, Texas, and has appeared on ESPN performing his trademark weapons routine to music. Some of his awards follow:

	1983, 1985, 1986: Best All-Around Male Black Belt in Texas, from Karate / Kung Fu Illustrated Magazine
	1980-1986: Rated Number 1 in Texas Weapons Competition, from Karate / Kung Fu Illustrated Magazine

Philosophy

I offer a series of belts designed for the children and their abilities. These belts are not purchased; they must be earned. The average time at each belt is 32 classes. The child must be able to perform the techniques properly and must know our vocabulary words (honesty, courtesy, self-control, and perserverance).

The first things taught in the class are the vocabulary words. From there, the children progress to stretching, basic blocking, punching, and kicking. The program is designed to help build the following qualities in a child:

	Knowledge and respect for the basic principles of self-control, honesty, courtesy, and perseverance.
	Strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility.
	Hard work and natural growth are their own rewards, not a belt every month.

The following rules will apply in class:

The child will learn not to use their karate for fighting at home, the daycare, or school.
If a child is disrupting class with inappropriate behavior, the child will be put in "time out." If the child continues to misbehave, the child will sit out of class for the day and a note will be left for the parent.

Price

The cost of one day per week is $25.00 per month; second family members receive $5.00 off.

The cost of a two-day week is $50.00 per month, second family members receive $10.00 off.

Belt Exam fee is $25.00

You may purchase uniforms anywhere, or from Mr. Blackledge.

	You must wear white uniforms until the green belt.
	You must wear white or red safety gear.
	Mouthpiece and groin cup are required.
